Visions of the Earth
Let’s start with something we’re all vaguely familiar with. Earth from the surface of the moon. “Earthrise is the name given to a photograph of Earth taken by astronaut Willaim Anders in 1968 during the Apollo 8 mission. In Life’s 100 Photographs that Changed the World, wilderness photographer Galen Rowell called it “the most influential environmental photograph ever...

Warning: art that will blow your mind
I am writing this in a state of immense wellbeing. If I was asked to take a happiness survey right now, the results would make Britons look like the most blissful nation on earth. Outside, the London sunshine is cool and the trees finally look wintry, but in here, in my head, it is California. And I did not have to drop acid in the Mojave desert to break on through to this other...

Carl Sagan's Cosmos
Carl Sagan was just about the perfect scientist. A truly beautiful mind it seems his life quest was to convey the beauty of space to the rest of the world. He certainly did that much, having touched me when I read his Pulitzer prize winning ‘Cosmos’ The book was turned into a TV series for PBS in the states in the early mid 80’s and remains to this day a wonderful insight into...
Competition time

Greg. Wilson.
We’ve gone and done something very, very special indeed. We are absolutely priveleged, no wait - HONOURED host a true legend in December @ WeAreElements - GREG WILSON. Incredibly it’ll be the first time in Oxford for Greg - and frankly, We’re a little bit weepy in the eye at the prospect of having him grace us with his presence. All too often the word ‘Legend’ gets...
LHC really getting going....
The Large Hadron Collider has successfully created a “mini-Big Bang” by smashing together lead ions instead of protons.
The scientists working at the enormous machine on Franco-Swiss border achieved the unique conditions on 7 November.
The experiment created temperatures a million times hotter than the centre of the Sun.
The LHC is housed in a 27km-long circular tunnel...

From here to infinity.....
This is what started it all off for me. One of the most impossible, incredible, insane documentaries I’ve ever seen. You will NEVER see maths in the same light again. You will NEVER feel so small. I cant’ recommend this enough.
DISCLAIMER : Contains scenes from a chap called MAX TEGMARK. He MIGHT fry your tiny little mind.

The lost Apollo project
The lost Apollo project…….
Taken from the website “TopTenz” - Top 10 lost technologies
Not all lost technology dates back to antiquity—sometimes it’s just become so obsolete that it’s no longer compatible. The Apollo and Gemini space programs of the 50s, 60s, and 70s were responsible for NASA’s biggest successes, including some of the first manned space flights and the...

Dark matter hunt eyes deeper home
Scientists are looking to relocate an underground experiment searching for dark matter to an even deeper site.
Cosmic rays striking the Earth could completely mask the rare dark matter events sought by the experiment.
Team members want to cut out as much of this cosmic ray interference as possible, even if it means moving the experiment 2km below ground.
This could help them...
Notes on a disco.....
If you want the excitement of performing for an audience, taking a show on the road, yet you do not play a musical instrument and can’t sing a note – you can still be a performer, by running your own mobile disco. You can buy all the equipment you need from a specialist shop or, if you understand electronics, build it yourself. This usually works out cheaper, you can build exactly what...

A universe not made for us
The Pale Blue Dot is a photograph of planet Earth taken in 1990 by Voyager 1 from a record distance, showing it against the vastness of space. By request of Carl Sagan, NASA commanded the Voyager 1 spacecraft, having completed its primary mission and now leaving the Solar System, to turn its camera around and to take a photograph of Earth across a great expanse of space.

Black hole blows huge gas bubble
Taken from BBC Science & Technology website
A small black hole has been observed blowing a vast bubble of hot gas 1,000 light-years across.
The gas is expanding because it is being heated by powerful particle “jets” being released by the black hole.
The observations were made by the Very Large Telescope in Chile and Nasa’s Chandra space observatory.

Planck telescope reveals ancient cosmic light
“This is the extraordinary place where we all live - the Universe.
The picture is the first full-sky image from Europe’s Planck telescope which was sent into space last year to survey the “oldest light” in the cosmos.
It took the 600m-euro observatory just over six months to assemble the map.
It shows what is visible beyond the Earth to instruments that are...
